ELAR » Unit 02: Making Sense of Language (6 Weeks)
This unit bundles student outcomes addressing conventions and patterns of language to support literacy development. Students begin to make connections between listening, speaking, reading, and writing through a literacy-rich environment. During this unit, students will begin to learn how to appropriately respond in a variety of situations. Opportunities to learn in a variety of ways, from both teacher and peers, should be provided. Some examples include: listening to shared experiences from classmates and teacher, participating in a shared reading experience, engaging in conversations with peers and teacher, and role playing how to appropriately respond in a variety of situations.
Phonological awareness is introduced as students explore how sentences are made up of individual words, rhyming words and compound words though listening to poems, songs, nursery rhymes, and informational text. Letter formation and connections between spoken words and written symbols are introduced through comparisons of student’s name and names of classmates.
